I cannot believe it has been two years! Thanks to the McHenry's for changing our lives forever. Tomorrow night we will celebrate with good food and hopefully champagne!

Update on Ryan

Congratulations to Ryan for completing the Columbus marathon last weekend!

So Ryan donated a kidney to Neal in January of 2008. In the fall of 2008, Ryan ran the Columbus half marathon. This past weekend, Ryan ran the full marathon in Columbus. Pretty amazing. I am asking for predictions on what he will do in 2010?

Tomorrow the guys are in the Circleville Pumpkin parade for Donate Life at 8pm. They are driving the mustang and Honey Bee (the Donate Life mascot). Leslie and Connor will be there and hopefully the twins and I will make it. Supposedly you can watch it online. Keep an eye out for us!

Remember this....

I am sure neither Ryan or Neal have forgotten this day. Fear and anticipation filled the hospital to say the least, but look where we are today.

We are joining another walk to raise awareness for organ donation. I think it is just a mile. The babies will be participating as long as the weather permits. They are quite the little fundraisers. Here is the letter from my husband.

It is that time of year again. The National Kidney Foundation walk is quickly approaching. The National Kidney Foundation is a great organization that helps inform the public about Kidney disease and transplantation.

Very few people in my situation have had such a great outcome. Only with the love and support of my family and friends am I alive today. Whether it is waking up in the middle of the night to change a poopy, excuse me, two poopy diapers I do it with great pleasure, knowing that less than 2 years ago I had a hard time even walking to the bathroom from the couch. The love shown by the McHenry family over the last 2 years is unbelievable. I can never repay them for what they have done for our family. Because of Ryan and the McHenry clan I will be able to intimidate my daughters first boyfriend, congratulate my son on the winning touchdown in overtime against the Steelers, and dance at both of their weddings. I am truly THE luckiest man alive.

I can never repay Ryan and Leslie for the life saving decision they made. I can only try and help raise awareness. The National Kidney Foundation is just one way I can help out. So please support us as we try to help the National Kidney Foundation of Ohio raise awareness.

Dash for Donation

Saturday was the Dash for Donation. It really is a great event. It appeared as though there were about 1600 people in attendance. We had a great turnout as always. Ryan ran the half marathon while the rest of us did the 5k. It is hard to believe it has been over a year and a half since the transplant. Organ donation changes lives.

I also had to upload a picture of all of our babies. We are finally a family again.

I am starting a team for the team challenge for the Dash for Donation. I won’t be asking you to raise any money but to just pay the $10 registration fee. If you want to run/walk this event just let me know and I will collect your form and fee. If you need a form, send us a note. To be on the team, you will not sign up through the website, but through me. I need the forms by mid July. I will more than likely be walking this event with my two new babies. If you come to the event I will let you smell the babies. They will only be a month old and probably still have that new baby smell.

There is a new, cheap and easy way to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation. Please read if you are interested. This will also count as fundraising for us for the 2009 US Transplant games in Wisconsin. We will need every penny given that we will be towing the twins, possibly Ryan, Leslie and Connor and maybe some Grandparents! All you have to do is register your Kroger Plus card online for the National Kidney Foundation. If you choose to do this, provide us with your name and Kroger card number so we can also get credit. Neal and Ryan were asked to present some awards at a Donate Life event. The event was on Saturday, conveniently downtown, across from the Arnold Classic. The awards were honoring medical professionals. It was Neal's largest crowd to date and a small audience for Ryan. The meal was amazing. Both guys also were given 2-3 minutes to tell their own stories and did a great job. Ryan was able to give the crowd a few laughs. The beginning of Ryan's speech talked about how we had earned one name status like Cher with them. We are Neal&Michele. It was very cute and very true on the reverse as well. In emails with my Dad, they are R&L. We look forward to the many future vacations and camping trips we will have together. Some people came up to us afterwards to talk with us. Some people even said they had a few tears after hearing the guys talk. It was a great evening and a change of pace since we were not out telling our story to get people to sign up to donate, but simply to meet others who already support organ donation. Hopefully Neal will be asked to participate in more speaking engagements.

Minimally invasive organ removal could increase donations, surgeons sayFebruary 2, 2009- In what is believed to be a first-ever procedure, surgeons at Johns Hopkins have successfully removed a healthy donor kidney through a small incision in the back of the donor’s vagina.“The kidney was successfully removed and transplanted into the donor’s niece, and both patients are doing fine,” says Robert Montgomery, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the transplant division at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who led the team that performed the historic operation.The transvaginal donor kidney extraction, performed Jan. 29 on a 48-year-old woman from Lexington Park, Md., eliminated the need for a 5-to-6-inch abdominal incision and left only three pea-size scars on her abdomen, one of which is hidden in her navel.The novel surgery was performed by Mohamad E. Allaf, M.D., assistant professor in the departments of Urology and Biomedical Engineering and director of minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Allaf has performed a previous transvaginal nephrectomy on a diseased kidney, but this was the first time he has operated on a kidney donor.“In contrast to removing diseased kidneys, this procedure has to deliver a perfect kidney since it will be used by the recipient,” says Allaf.Transvaginal kidney removals have been done previously to remove cancerous or nonfunctioning kidneys that endanger a patient’s health, but not for healthy kidney donation. Because transplant donor nephrectomies are the most common kidney removal surgery — 6,000 a year just in the United States — this approach could have a tremendous impact on people’s willingness to donate by offering more surgical options,” says Montgomery.“Since the first laparoscopic donor nephrectomy was performed at Johns Hopkins in 1995, surgeons have been troubled by the need to make a relatively large incision in the patient’s abdomen after completing the nephrectomy to extract the donor kidney. “That incision is thought to significantly add to the patient’s pain, hospitalization and convalescence,” says Montgomery. “Removing the kidney through a natural opening should hasten the patient’s recovery and provide a better cosmetic result.”Both laparoscopies and transvaginal operations are enabled by wandlike cameras and tools inserted through small incisions. In the transvaginal nephrectomy, two wandlike tools pass through small incisions in the abdomen and a third flexible tool housing a camera is placed in the navel.Video images displayed on monitors guide surgeons’ movements. Once the kidney is cut from its attachments to the abdominal wall and arteries and veins are stapled shut, surgeons place the kidney in a plastic bag inserted through an incision in the vaginal wall and pull it out through the vaginal opening with a string attached to the bag.Montgomery says the surgery took about three and a half hours, roughly the same as a traditional laparoscopic procedure.The Jan. 29 operation is one of a family of new surgical procedures called natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgeries (NOTES) that use a natural body opening to remove organs and tissue, according to Anthony Kalloo, M.D., the director of the Division of Gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the pioneer of NOTES. The most common openings used are the mouth, anus and vagina.Since 2004, successful NOTES in humans have removed diseased gallbladders and appendixes through the mouth, and gallbladders, kidneys and appendixes through the vagina.Recently, Kalloo says, some medical experts have called for more studies to compare the safety and effectiveness of NOTES against traditional laparoscopies, which also leave very small scars, have been in use for many years, and are proven to be safer and less painful for patients than older “open” abdominal procedures. He supports more studies.But, he adds, “natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery is the final frontier to explore in making surgery scarless, less painful and for obese patients, much safer.” An organ donor, in particular, is most deserving of a scar-free, minimally invasive and pain-free procedure.”Additional surgeons from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who participated in the procedure were Andy Singer, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the Division of Transplant Surgery; and Wen Shen, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

I put together the baby furniture on Monday. One of the cribs was broken. I have to wait to get a replacement part and it will all be done. Only took 4 min to put the crib together. The changing table took longer. So far this baby thing is a snap, for me that is. Michele on the other hand throws up a minimum 2 times a day. Growing babies is tough stuff.

Time Flies

It seems like more than a year ago that the transplant happened. One year ago Neal and I and Ryan and Leslie had so many emotions running through us. Neal and I could barely sleep due to anticipation, fear and thoughts of a new life, a second chance you would say. The days leading up to the transplant, Neal was cleaning things around our house that had never been cleaned! I guess we were just trying to find a way to pass the time more quickly. I was more anxious for Ryan and Leslie, because this was all new to them. Neal and I were veterans of being in the hospital and having surgeries, nor did we really have a choice on this surgery. We did not want to continue the dialysis route, it was too brutal. Ryan and Leslie were voluntarily getting into this. I am sure Ryan and Leslie had their own list of emotions! Neal always told me (and I never believed it) that being nice to people would pay back someday. I have to admit he was right in a bigger way than I could have imagined. Thursday we are headed out to a nice dinner with Ryan and Leslie to celebrate the one year anniversary of the transplantation of 'Lil Ryan. This will be a tradition we will carry on for many years.

We have had a great holiday season. We headed to Cleveland to see my extended family for Thanksgiving. The day after Thanksgiving, we were able to have all of our immediate family down to our place for Thanksgiving. We made it up to see Neal's family in December. While in town, Neal was able to catch a very cold Browns game with his family at the stadium. We are very thankful for the wonderful year we have had. For Christmas we got the flu or something else just as horrible! Neal had to spend a couple of nights over at OSU, but was freed on Christmas Day. As Ryan reminded us, that was nothing compared to some prior Christmas'.

Other than the flu or food poisoning Neal picked up for Christmas, his health is better than ever. Neal met with the oncologist in December and had another ultrasound and Lil Ryan is looking great. Ryan is fully recovered also. He had an appointment for a routine physical and everything looks great.

You cannot repay someone for giving you your life back. Try to tell Ryan and Leslie that! One of the first things Neal told Leslie immediately after the transplant was "Tell Ryan thanks, now Michele and I can start our own family". Well that time has come. We are so excited of the news that we are expecting twins. The babies will be here in July. We got to see them again on the 2nd and they were kicking and moving all over the place. We could not have done this without our completely selfless friends. Thanks McHenry's for giving us our life back! 2008 has been an amazing year and 2009 should be just as exciting!

Stacy made us a special pie to celebrate the babies. It was delicious! Perhaps we should have moved the large knife from the picture. I could not help but post a picture.

So I have asked a million questions and it looks like there is a great way to fundraise for the National Kidney Foundation that does not cost anyone a thing. You can purchase a $5 gift card to Kroger or $25 gift card to Giant Eagle through the NKF. You can then reload this card at the customer service desk. 5% of all money spent on that gift card will be donated to the NKF.
So just spending a couple of minutes at the customer service counter could raise a lot of money for the NKF. Neal knows exactly how much I HATE the customer service desk at Kroger, but I will suck it up for a good cause.

If you are interested, let me know. I will coordinate purchasing the initial gift card. I was warned that the customer service desk may have no awareness to this, so if you ask them any questions do not be surprised when you get a blank stare, which is what they are trained to do. The sku on the gift card is what ties the spending to the NKF.

My assumption is you will get your gas discounts when you reload the gift card, but I am not 100% sure. I can let you know after I get my gift card.

Busy Weekend

Friday a few of us went to the Mansfield Reformatory. It was a blast. They have a haunted house that runs through the old prison. We took a few pictures.

Ryan turned 30 this week! Happy birthday to him. Ryan also ran the Columbus Half Marathon. Very impressive!!!!!!!!! Very proud of him. He deserves the nap he got.

Joey on the other hand did not deserve the nap. We went fishing on Sunday to Lake Erie. We didn't catch anything but Joey caught a nap on the way home. Must be nice.

Gary and the Bucks

I took Gary to his first Buckeye game against Poodoo(Purdue). The game was a stinker. We still had a good time. We walked around the tailgate areas, took a gander at Heinegate(pre and post game), the Skull Session, and walked around the shoe. We walked around St. John Arena and when we actually walked in we saw Coach Tressel speak and then the players walked out. We were right above the tunnel the players and coaches walked out. Great timing on my part. Even though the game stunk it was still a good time. Here are some pictures.

I had an EEG a few days ago. Just wanted to see if I had any lasting effects from the seizures. I don't know the results just yet. I had the lady take a picture of me. God look at my neck. I think I have about 3 twinkies stored in there. GROSS!!!

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that measures and records the electrical activity of your brain. Special sensors are attached to your head and hooked by wires to a computer. The computer records your brain's electrical activity on the screen or on paper as wavy lines. Certain conditions, such as seizures, can be seen by the changes in the normal pattern of the brain's electrical activity.

One year ago

One year ago, I was 28 years old and my husband of 6 years was 30. My husband was on a ventilator at OSU, in what I referred to as a drug induced coma. He would not respond to my voice or my touch. I was in the ICU with my family and friends when a doctor told me that they thought something was or actually was not going on in my husband's brain. I was told that the fact that his tongue could potentially get cut off, was not at all an issue to deal with now. A doctor actually let my family and friends think that Neal was brain dead. For days we would all go back and visit hoping to get a response from him and nothing. It was days before tests were run to prove the doctors wrong.

I drove him to the hospital just 12 hours earlier and he knew my name and his name (although he could barely talk since his tongue was swollen throughout his entire mouth), but could not even tell me what year it was. He did not even answer let alone acknowledge my question "What year is it?" He simply stared into space as if my question never made it to his brain. I immediately called my sister and said meet me at the hospital right now, something is really wrong. Upon arriving at the hospital we were taken to a trauma room. We had never visited this area of the ER before, which was not a good sign. Neal was put on a ventilator and taken away for tests. Six hours later we saw him heavily sedated on a ventilator and still had no answers. My mom stated it best, this was a real life NIGHTMARE.

Thankfully the images of this nightmare are slowly fading. Neal likes to joke about this incident. I in turn do not think anything about it is funny and wish I could forget the month of October 2007 forever, perhaps even the entire year! Who would have thought we would be where we are today. Neal is in the best shape since we first started dating 13 years ago. I think we both have a new, improved outlook on life.

Michele and I have settled into our grove. I keep working out as much as I physically can. Michele has picked up tennis. She is getting better every time she plays. We have had a few lessons together. I started taking advanced lessons. I really enjoy playing. I hate watching it. All the tennis people like watching it. Most weeks I play on Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I started a softball team(I play and coach) and we play at Berliner on Wednesdays. We are 3-3 so far. We ran up against a really good team and one team that was just awful. Hopefully we can make the playoffs but who knows.

Ryan is ready for this half marathon. He can already run the half. Impressive. For a Clydesdale.

I am again going zip lining on October 4th. I am taking my nephew Austin. It is his birthday present. He does not know he is going. So if you read this Austin this is what we are doing for your b-day.

Michele and I volunteered at the NBC4 Health Expo for Donate Life of Ohio. It was a little weird in the beginning but after a while it was fine. We got 3 or 4 people to sign up to donate there organs upon there demise. No one else that worked there at the time we were there had anyone sign up. I think it went well. Now comes the boneheaded part. One lady came up to the table and said that when her son died in a car crash she donated all of his organs. I then said how wonderful. Sad thing is it sounded more like I said how wonderful about the car crash. The lady did not say anything about it and probably knew what I meant. I can kind of laugh about it but I felt a little bad. But I got her to sign up to give up her organs upon death. That is what Donate Life gets for sending me out in the public with no training before hand. I plan on becoming a ambassador for Donate Life in the near future. Just one more training class.

Michele forgot to mention we went to Ruth's Chris for dinner. Here she is digging into a plate of cheesecake.

Neal and I just celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. In total we have been together for 13 years. Last year we were at a tailgate and Neal had to use a cane to walk and could only stay an hour. This year, we road our bikes down to tailgate from the Park of Roses and I had to drag him out of there. What a difference a year makes! I accidentally scheduled a tennis lesson on our anniversary, so we did that followed by dinner and dessert. At least I did not try to schedule a boys night at an Indians game!

Neal is doing great. Better than ever. Ryan has also recovered quite nicely. What is a guy to do after donating his kidney to his friend...... run a half marathon. Seems logical to me. Ryan is running for a cause. We are proud to say he is our friend! Here is a letter from him.

Friends and Family,

Many of you know that I am training for the Columbus Half-Marathon. I'm currently up to 11 miles in preparation for the 13.1 miles on race day Saturday, October 19th. I recently found out that I will be a "Clydesdale" in the race. When I went to sign up I had to pick a category of runner, the categories are "Men", "Women", "Clydesdales" and "Athenas". No, I will not be in horse-costume towing a buggy of Budweiser. So what is a Clydesdale? It's a man over 200 pounds competing in a half marathon. Apparently we have our own category in the racing world. While my initial goal was simply to complete the half marathon, that has since changed. My new goal is to be the first "Clydesdale" across the finish line. The fastest fat man in the field! For 2009, my goal is to simply attain "Man" status in the racing world! You've got to start somewhere I guess.

What many of you don't know is why I am running in the marathon. This year, a co-worker of mine at Pearson Education, Marissa Feliberty, passed away from cancer. At just 40 years old she left a husband and 3 young children. Marissa's battle with cancer came at the same time as my own brush with the disease. When I went for my follow up with the oncologist in March to make sure my remaining kidney was clear, I made a visit to Marissa, who was also in the James Cancer Hospital that day. Just a week prior, Marissa had learned that her cancer was terminal. Needless to say, when my own results came back that morning clear as expected, it was not a joyous day of relief but a day of many emotions. Marissa passed away days later on March 18th, 2008.

A group of people at my company got together afterward and wanted to do something to honor Marissa and support her family. We are raising money for her children's college funds, Chloe (13), Ben (11), and Olivia (9). Paul, Dave and I went fishing up at the lake on Sunday on my Uncle Greg's boat. There was some serious wave action. We got in some really big waves. I think at one point there were some 6 footers. It was tough. Dave got a little green. ha. Paul, Greg and I were fine but Dave was one cough away from tossin. It was a blast!! I caught a big Sheepshead(freshwater drum). It was around 28 inches and weighed 8lbs 5oz. Biggest fish I have ever caught! Thanks Greg!

Lil' Ryan Update

Got the results of my tests. Good news/Bad News. I will start with the bad news........... My three other kidneys are still not working. Guess I have to keep lil' Ryan. Lil' Ryan is cancer free. I am pumped. I had an ultrasound before but a CT scan showed no kind of growths. If you don't know before the transplant the scans showed a cyst. This time nothing!!!!!!!! MONEY!!!

Denise, Leslie, Mom, Mike and Michele volunteered at a water station on the half marathon path. It was way busier than they anticipated! They had a good time doing it. They wish they could have seen the rest of the group...hopefully next year.

I had several friends run in race. All finished well. Almost everyone beat me except Connor, and dude can't even crawl all that good yet! ha. It was a really hot and very hilly run. I was out there doing it so I am happy with the results.

I had a cat scan done on lil' Ryan. I will know more later but don't expect anything bad. I had to drink that barium drink. BLAAAAAAAAAAA. I chugged 2 jugs like a champ! The worst part was the IV. I don't miss those at all. Though when I usually had them in I would be all morphined up!!!!

Barium update. Last night at tennis my I had "stomach" pains. My stomach hurt to bad I thought it was going to explode. I got home and just made it to the throne. It must have been that barium stuff. God I had to hold on for my life!!!! I know TMI and very gross!! Just a warning to those that don't know. Now ya know!

I had my appointment with Dr. Davies. It went well. She was happy with my weight and health. She was happy that I have dropped a good amount of weight and was exercising on a regular basis. My hemoglobin is still not normal for a male. It will probably stay this way. Doc said that it is actually about what a women's level would be. She said that some studies show that this is a contributing factor to why women have a lower rate of heart disease. The blood is actually not as thick so there is less work the heart has to do. She also said that she is really not to worried about the cancer and I will just get my cat scanned every 6 months for 3 years, then 1 once a year forever.

I hope this is enough for cheryl to read. Lord knows I don't want to piss her off.

We will post an update and pictures, but I just wanted to say Neal did a great job. Tomorrow is 6 months from the transplant and if a stranger saw him they would never guess. He shaved about 10 minutes off of his last 5k time, which is unheard of. On the way home, Neal was the only one that did not need a nap. Things sure have changed.

Counting down to stardom

Wednesday night we met up with the Dispatch photographer at Ryan and Leslie's. She took a lot of photos and I think we entertained her. The guys had their arms around each other (this was a first) and we played a couple of hands of euchre....I know exciting! The article is supposed to come out on Saturday the 12th in the Life section. Ryan and Leslie are off to Costa Rica and as soon as they return we are headed to Pittsburgh for the Transplant games. Next week, Neal will be practicing for the games. It will be a jam packed weekend.

We took a ride down to Hocking Hills for the 4th. Neal, Austin and I went hiking. I think we got a little more than we intended, but we made it out. We were out for almost 4 hours and had lunch by Cedar Falls. It really was beautiful. Unfortunatly it rained the entire time back. We were soaked and of course I slipped and got all muddy. We think it was around 6 or 7 miles. Quite a workout. Austin even fell asleep on the way home.

We are now at home and Neal and Austin (age 13) are playing Wii. I am watching two, I guess I would call them boys. They are constantly making fun of one another. Although I am wondering which one is truly more mature, I am smiling watching them. Boys and men will be boys! I will have to try and get video tape of their touchdown dances!

Something interesting happened to me the other day. My transplant doctor retired. It would have been nice to know a little in advance so I could "interview" some other doctors. I am just going to see Dr. Davies. She is a really good doctor. I think she borders on insanity and genius. She is very smart. I had her as my last transplant doctor so I know I am in good hands.

Now the tennis update. I have picked tennis back up after a 15 year hiatus. It took about a month now and I have my swing back. I went from losing to my sister Stacy 6-0,6-0 to losing 6-3,6-4. Give me another month and I will be kickin her a$$. I also joined a tennis league. There are some good people in the league and some bad people. So I fit in just fine.

Jen, Matt, Connor, Leslie, and Ryan came over for dinner last night. We played rockband!!!!!!! God it was great. Also, we have yet another personalized plate. It is over there ------------>

We are headed off to Jamaica in less than 24 hours.

Father's Day

We had a wonderful weekend camping at Mohican. We were even able to get a canoe trip in between storms on Friday. We made record time paddling like fools to make sure we missed the storms. Of course, there was no one there to pick us up. They showed up eventually. We also got to take Connor out for his first hike. It was wonderful. Connor is definetely a camper. I will get some pictures up once we get them. Leslie is my personal photographer.

Dad and Dorothy came up to the camp site on Father's Day. I was glad they could make it to see the camper. We had a great visit. We were able to make foil dinners. I grew up on these things in the summer. They are still pretty good for the amount of effort you put into them.

Neal surprised me on Sunday with some new license plates. I had mentioned to him that I wanted to get some. They are great, he even personalized them. I guess I will have to watch my road rage now that I am more easily identified on the road.

We leave for Jamaica in a week. We are ready for a vacation! We have another booked weekend ahead of us first with another 5k, Joey and Kristin's wedding (sure to produce some great photos) and a meeting for the Transplant Games.

I had my appointment with Dr. Pohar my oncologist today. The preliminary results are good. No cysts or growths. He said I will need to see him every 6 months for the next few years. Then after that once a year for the rest of my life. I may have to have my cat scan ed in a few years. I am fine with that. Michele and I were very happy. I would have given her a kiss but she has one hell of a nasty zit near her lips. PUKE!!!!!!

Busy Days

Neal and I have been doing a lot. Neal has taken up tennis as his new sport. Unfortunately I am not very good. Last weekend we headed up to Cleveland to see DJ's, Neal's nephew, graduate high school. We are very proud of him! We managed to get up to Elyria early to have a Schmity Burger. It is the best burger in town.

Oh yeah, I almost left out the most exciting part. A bird dropped a present on my lip. I asked Neal to clean it off and he smeared it everywhere. It was gross. Luckily we do not have a picture of this!

This weekend Neal had to work all day Saturday. I headed up to Cleveland with Mom and Mike to go to Dawn's wedding reception. Dawn is my oldest friend. We grew up on the same street and I feel like a part of her family. Dawn provided me with a lot of cell phone support during the last couple of years. I think my "other" family is starting to believe Neal is my pretend husband since he can never make any events. We are going to be visiting with Dawn and Brian in Pittsburgh in July. Neal will be there for sure. Congrats to Dawn and Brian! We are looking forward to getting to know Brian better in July.

Sunday, Neal and I headed to Cleveland to see his Uncle Greg. Uncle Greg had open heart surgery on Monday and is doing great. The noises at the hospital brought back a lot of bad memories, however it was nice that Neal was not the patient. Uncle Greg had one of his valves replaced with a cow valve. It really is amazing what doctors can do. I am not sure I understand how they do not all have a god complex.

We have a busy week planned and a camping trip set for next weekend. As you can see Neal is putting a lot of miles on our cars and on our legs. Neal's follow up with the oncologist is on Tuesday, so please think good thoughts. We will post after the appointment.

Memorial Day Weekend

We had quite the busy weekend. Saturday we went up to Cleveland for a family wedding. We stayed with my dad overnight in Akron. Congrats to Amy and Bill! We had a good visit. There was an old school photo booth at the wedding. It was a great addition to any event. Here are our shots.

Neal must really be pumping it up at the gym. He was able to pick me up for a photo!

Sunday we did some yardwork and cooked out at Mom and Mike's. Neal got the Mustang cleaned up so we could ride in style.

Monday morning rolled around too quickly. We did the 5k and Neal far exceeded his original goal. According to us, we finished in 57 minutes and 13 seconds. He did a great job and it is quite an accomplishment with all he has been through. Ryan joined us for the 5k as well along with Cheryl and some of her friends and family. It is pretty amazing given what these two guys have gone through that they were both out there running. Apparently we are so good looking, news channel 4 had to put us on. Here is the clip....

We all plan to sign up for more throughout the summer and shave our time. After the race we had a cookout at Ryan and Leslie's. We have determined that I am not only bad at tennis, but equally as bad at badminton. Neal wanted me to mention that him and Patty were the ones to beat.

Life is great. Neal and I are filling our days with so much. Saturday we spent 5 hours learning about the organization Donate Life. The organization is funded by the government, so we will not be hitting everyone up for money! The presentation was very well done and we are hoping to donate our time to the organization. Ryan and Leslie also attended. There were probably 20 people at the meeting. All but one of them were personally touched by organ donation. It was wonderful to hear others stories and to share ours. I of course was the cry baby in our group. I spent a lot of the meeting thinking to myself. The things that constantly loom in my head are:

1) Images of Neal at particular stages of 2007 that continue to give me nightmares. I am hoping that today's meeting provided some type of closure or something that will help me to forget that year. I am afraid the decisions I had to make and the thoughts I had at particular points will haunt me forever. When I have these horrible thoughts I try to twist them around instead of remembering the day for the bad thing that happened, I try to picture the large group of family and friends that were around to support us. I know I need to leave these ghosts in the past, it is just not that easy. Thankfully Neal does not remember much.

2) How can we ever repay Ryan and Leslie? It seems as though every wonderful day we have I am thinking of them. We do not have enough money to buy them what they truly deserve. After introducing myself at today's meeting I thought, wait I want another turn. I want people to know how Ryan and Leslie were there for us not just at the time of the donation, but they helped us get through the difficult times when Neal was in the hospital. I knew whatever I asked they would do in a heartbeat, no questions asked. How much Neal being sick impacted them. How they had their first child, yet were still willing to have Ryan go through a major operation and be laid up on sets. What "gift" is sufficient?

3) Why would you not be an organ donor? You are dead, you do not need your organs. I read a t-shirt once that said "Don't Take Your Organs to Heaven...Heaven Knows We Need Them Here". Sadly we found out only 50% of Ohioans are organ donors and of those only about 1% pass in a way that allows organ donation to occur. http://www.lifelineofohio.org/

We are happily married (at least I am!) and we are not letting time pass us by. I hope we continue to do this for the rest of our lives. I hope others learn to do this for the rest of their lives. The "NEW" Neal is better than ever! We continue to train for the 5k and are hoping to do more. Lifeline is having a race in July. It is getting to be that time of year. Columbus Clippers time. They are the AAA affiliate of the Washington Nationals. They used to be the affiliates of that crappy team in Boo York. I had to go. It was the only baseball in town. Excluding the buckeyes.

The last game I went to I took a liner off of my chest from the bat of Milky(Melky) Cabrera. I would have caught the ball but my friend Matt got in the way. He can be a big dumb animal some times.

I hope to make a couple of games this year. Especially dime a dog night. Where the cold hot dogs are a plenty. No onions though. Can sell hot dogs for 10 cents but can't give away onions. O' well.

Dr Visit & NIT

I had another Dr appointment yesterday. Everything went well. I was able to stop taking Nexium(costs about 500 bucks a year!!!) and hopefully can stop taking lipitor in June. He is happy with all of the test results. He wants me to get an ultrasound of the kidney and I already have one scheduled with the oncologist in June. I also only have to get blood draws once a week now. I love that!!! I should have taken Lusk to dialysis with me. The needles they use to stick a fistula are like mini swords. Painfull as a mother!

Also bucks took the NIT, or as Harry would say Ohio really pulled it out(come on Evans you have worked at osu for 30 something years no one calls it Ohio). I was talking to Lusker today and it was funny we both agreed that the "victory" ceremony was cut very short on tv. I went to pee as soon as the game was over and when I came back the coverage for the basketball game was over. Damn new kidney prevented me from seeing the ceremony. I guess it is the NIT and no one cares.

NIT Fun

Michele and I went to the NIT first round game. It was really fun. We had great seats starting off and got better seats during the first half. We had to move because I was sitting next to the smelliest kid ever. No joke. Michele and I were getting sick. We were only 12 rows from the floor and move up to only 4 rows from the floor. Thank god for the smelly kid.

I wonder if he will keep growing and next year be 7' 9". I will have to look him up in UNC Ashville's media guide. He did not run well during the game and you could have called 3 seconds on him every time they had the ball when he was in. He still had great hands and good vision for being such a big guy. There were of course a few no-jump needed dunks. I mean the guy is 2 feet taller and 2 hundred pounds heavier than I am.

Needless to say the bucks were bringing rain when shooting over this cat. Fun game. We hope to go to the rest of them that are in Columbus.
